The Commissioner for the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has confirmed the demolition of properties within the Mojisola Onikoyi Shoreline Estate, Parkview Estate, and Banana Island collector drain in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Wahab disclosed that the Enforcement team of the Ministry began the removal of illegal structures on the setbacks of the collector drain after the expiration of contravention notices served earlier. The primary objective is to ensure unimpeded access to the collector drain, facilitating essential cleaning and maintenance.

The upscale estates, known for their luxurious properties, have witnessed a surge in construction encroaching on critical water management infrastructure. Wahab emphasized the necessity of addressing this issue promptly to prevent potential environmental hazards, particularly during the upcoming rainy season.

The Commissioner highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the illegal structures not only violate regulations but also pose a significant risk to the overall environmental health of the region. With the removal of these impediments, the Ministry aims to bolster the drainage system’s efficiency and resilience in the face of increasing urbanization and climate challenges.

Local authorities have urged residents and property owners to cooperate with the ongoing enforcement operation, emphasizing the collective responsibility to maintain a sustainable and secure environment. The Ministry’s move aligns with broader initiatives in Lagos to enhance urban resilience and mitigate the impact of environmental degradation.
