The unexpected return of Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin as the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has stirred surprise and speculation among staff and officials. Gbadegesin, who was relieved of his position in May 2020 by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reemerged in the leadership role, leaving many questioning the circumstances behind his return.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s decision to remove Gbadegesin in 2020 was prompted by allegations of impropriety, leading to the initiation of a forensic audit into LAWMA’s affairs. The governor, known for his uncompromising stance against corruption and inefficiency, aimed to ensure an unhindered investigation into the agency’s activities.

Some staff members now assert that the forensic audit has seemingly vindicated Gbadegesin, prompting his reinstatement by Governor Sanwo-Olu. Those surprised by the MD’s return recall a climate of racketeering and widespread fraud during his previous tenure, which prompted the forensic audit in response to allegations raised by a group of whistleblowers known as the ‘Concerned LAWMA Operators.’

Despite the allegations of malfeasance at the time, there is speculation among some staff that the governor’s decision to reinstate Gbadegesin is a result of the forensic audit findings, suggesting his innocence. This faction believes that making allegations is one thing, but proving them true is another, and if the audit cleared Gbadegesin of any wrongdoing, his return is justifiable.
