Baby, Two Others Trapped as One-Storey Building Collapses in Ebute Metta
A one-storey building in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State has collapsed.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, revealed in a statement on Friday that the collapse has left three individuals, including a baby, ensnared within the debris. A woman, miraculously, has been successfully rescued from the ruins.
Issuing details on the emergency response, Adeseye stated, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to an emergency reported at 09:00 hours at 122, Herbert Macaulay Way, Lagos Bus Stop, Ebute Meta. A one-storey building with a penthouse has collapsed, and search and rescue efforts are underway for two adults and a baby—all females—still trapped.”
She further emphasized, “However, an adult female has been rescued alive and is in stable condition as the state emergency response is fully activated.”
This calamity compounds the rising trend of building collapses in Lagos, evoking memories of past tragedies.
In November, an elderly woman lost her life in a partial collapse of a two-storey building on Oloto Street, Ebute Metta. Similarly, in September, a building with over 500 rooms in the Ketu area suffered a collapse during heavy rainfall, injuring two residents. Originally constructed as a school, the building had been converted into a residential apartment.
The recurring incidents underscore the urgency for thorough structural assessments and robust safety measures to prevent further loss of life and property in Lagos’ architectural landscape.
