FG to Launch Diaspora Mortgage Housing in February
Ahmed Dangiwa, Nigeria’s Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has affirmed the ministry’s commitment to backing Diaspora initiatives in the housing sector and fostering collaborations with the Diaspora through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission for National Development. The Minister made these statements during a meeting with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and management staff in Abuja.
Ahead of the proposed launch in February 2024 of the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme in the UK, Canada, and the USA, Dangiwa expressed readiness to support the initiative. He highlighted the recently launched FMBN Diaspora Mortgage Scheme, initiated during his tenure as MD of FMBN in collaboration with NIDCOM, at the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit.
The Minister emphasized the broader goal of ensuring that Nigerians living abroad have decent shelter in Nigeria, calling it their home. He also disclosed the commitment of the Federal Housing Authority to the tripartite mandate of the Diaspora City Project in partnership with NIDCOM, FHA, and FCT, situated at Maitama 2 with over 675 hectares of land.
Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, discussing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda of Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora, announced that the Minister would officially unveil the details of the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme in the UK, USA, and Canada. She commended Dangiwa’s commitment and participation in the launch of the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme during the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit, noting the enthusiasm of Nigerians in the Diaspora for both the mortgage scheme and the upcoming Diaspora smart city in Kabusa, Maitama 2.
With approximately 20 million Nigerians in the Diaspora, remitting over $24 billion annually, these initiatives aim to enhance housing opportunities and strengthen economic ties with the Diaspora.
