Awka Indigenes Urge IG to Order Police Operatives Out of Disputed Land
Residents of Awka, particularly from the Ezinano area, have voiced their discontent over the deployment of police operatives to their land in Agu Nawgu. The community members are urging Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, to withdraw the operatives, asserting that their presence is hindering property development in the area.
During a recent protest, the indigenes attempted to inspect the land, but were met with resistance from police operatives who claimed orders prohibited anyone from entering the disputed area. The situation escalated as the operatives resorted to firing gunshots, further intensifying tensions.
Prominent community figure Chief Kanayo Obidigbo, participating in the inspection, pointed fingers at the Anambra State police authorities, alleging their involvement in the deployment and questioning their impartiality in the matter.
“We are here to inspect Agu Nawgu. This is a land that our great grandparents won in conquest. It is a vast land covering about 60 kilometres in radius. We have a survey plan dating back to 1949, crafted by our fathers who were illiterate,” stated Obidigbo during an address to the media.
The community members are now seeking intervention from higher authorities to address the perceived bias in the police deployment and to facilitate a resolution that allows for the uninterrupted development of the disputed land.
Tensions remain high as the community contends with the challenges posed by the police presence, emphasizing the need for a fair and impartial resolution to ensure the prosperity of Awka and its residents.
