In a bid to address Nigeria’s acute housing shortage, the Federal Government has partnered with private developers in a groundbreaking initiative to deliver 100,000 housing units across the nation. The collaboration, facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, involves a consortium comprising Continental Civil Construction and Ceezali Limited under a strategic Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The ambitious project is a key component of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme, aiming to tackle the severe housing crisis in the country. The partnership outlines that the consortium will provide construction finance and build the houses based on agreed designs and prices. Simultaneously, the ministry will facilitate affordable mortgage loans through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) for potential homeowners.

Addressing the housing shortage and recognizing budgetary limitations, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts. Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Abuja, he highlighted the importance of leveraging the strengths of both the public and private sectors.

The mass housing scheme, to be implemented in phases, will kick off with 20,000 units in the Federal Capital Territory, followed by an additional 80,000 houses in select locations across the six geopolitical zones. Dangiwa disclosed that the project, operating under the PPP arrangement, is expected to generate 2.5 million direct and indirect jobs, aligning with the national goal to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

The Minister underscored the government’s commitment to a transparent and sustainable partnership, urging the consortium to engage with technical staff throughout the project’s lifecycle. With a focus on accountability, fairness, and timely delivery, the collaboration aims to create not only housing solutions but also foster economic growth and enhance citizens’ quality of life.
