Lagos seeks private participation in building process

The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to partner the private sector to enhance service delivery in building control and development measures as a means to forestall building collapse.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, disclosed this at a meeting with a World Bank team, held recently.
According to him, the private sector will be involved in areas of Certified Accredited Programme, Post-Approval and Certificate of Structural Integrity.
“Through these measures and starting from next year, we will be able to effectively partner with the private sector in the areas of project supervision and stage certification as well as assessment of the structural stability of buildings in areas where building collapse is prevalent as a pilot,” he said.
Bamgbose-Martins also said the ministry would appreciate the World Bank’s collaboration especially in the areas of capacity building, public sensitisation and automation of planning permits for the success of the initiative.
Responding, the World Bank Senior Urban Development Specialist, Fuad Malkawi, said the team would be willing to provide technical assistance through the Lagos Platform for Development for the successful implementation of the ministry’s programme.
